“There is a way that seems right to a man, but its end is a way of death.”(Proverbs 14:12)
When a nation places its destiny in the hands of unwise leaders, the consequences are often severe. Progress is not only delayed – it is derailed. These leaders disregard the timeless guidance found in Scripture and lean heavily on their flawed judgement. Their way seems right, but its end is destruction.
This does not mean such leaders are beyond redemption. The true issue is their stubborn refusal to confront their own fallibility. They do not pause to reflect, question, or seek understanding. Instead, they operate in a self-constructed reality where they are always right and perpetually in control. ” A fool takes no pleasure in understanding, but only in expressing his opinion.” (Proverbs 18:2)
Foolish leaders lack two of the most vital qualities of sound governance: self-awareness and introspection. This dangerous ignorance fosters an astonishing resilience – not grounded in wisdom but in blind arrogance. As a result, they are not embarrassed by their folly; instead, they are emboldened by it.
Foolish leaders lack two of the most vital qualities of sound governance: self-awareness and introspection.
The Decay Caused by Foolish Leaders
Like an infection that infiltrates the body and eat away at its health, foolish leaders infect the soul of a nation. They tear down its excellence, treating it with contempt. In South Africa, this decay is not hidden – it is unfolding before our very eyes.
Under their leadership, national decline is inevitable. The economy faulters as corruption seeps into every public institution. The poor grow poorer in a cycle of suffering sustained by a deliberate weakening of the justice system ensuring these leaders remain unaccountable. The nation loses its dignity on a global stage.
Education is intentionally destabilised to keep the masses dependent. These leaders understand that an informed society is a threat on their grip on power. They fear an educated population – because wisdom births resistance.
I have seen foolish leaders attend church, but not to humble themselves or seek divine wisdom for governance. They go to secure popularity, and unscrupulous pastors – fraudsters in white collars – hand them the pulpit. These so-called spiritual leaders enable manipulation, allowing the rot to fester. These politicians embody Machiavelli’s principles: “A prince must always seem moral, even if he is not.”
In public they wear the musk of humility and strength, deceiving many. Their arrogance is mistaken for confidence., their deception for leadership. And the people in search of a saviour, cling to these false messiahs – worshiping mortals as though they were divine.
Characteristics of Foolish Leadership
It is not always easy to identify unwise leaders. They build fortresses around themselves. protected by loyalists, who would do anything to keep them in power. Yet certain traits consistently betray their character:
Arrogance: They see themselves as infallible. Criticism is an insult, mistakes are unthinkable. Learning becomes impossible.
Short-sightedness: Their vision does not extend beyond personal gain and popularity. The nation’s long-term welfare is of little concern.
Incompetence: Lacking the skills to lead, they hide their ineptitude behind bluster and bravado.
Deception and manipulation: They rely on lies and theatrics to remain relevant, preferring illusion over truth.
Disregarding of truth and wisdom: They surround themselves with flatterers and yes-men, because wise counsel threatens their ego.
Machiavelli once said: “Keeping one’s word can be dangerous since experience shows that those who do not keep it often triumph on those who do.” But does triumph justify treachery?
Why Societies Tolerate Foolish Leaders
This is perhaps the most painful truth: societies often allow fools to rule. Why? Because wise leadership is rare – and choosing it demands thought, reflection, and effort. Many find this too complex and burdensome. So, they accept the illusion presented to them and move on, opening the door for empty promises to thrive.
Foolish leaders and their followers share one critical flaw: they do not question their decisions. The more outrageous the promises, the more seductive they become. Ignorance becomes the tool of power, silencing dissent and reinforcing control. These leaders instal loyalists in strategic positions – particularly in media and communication – to manipulate public perception.
Tribal loyalty, charisma, and patronage schemes helps solidify their rule. And when their grip is threatened, they resort to suppression and even violence.
So, we must ask: Are these the leaders we really need? Is silence still an option?
