Truth is an Essential Antidote to the Lies That Cloud Our World
In today’s world deception has seeped in every corner, creating a toxic environment that clouds our judgement and distort reality. The very air is saturated with confusion, leading people to mistake evil for good and good for evil. Though everyone is affected by this disorientation, few truly recognise the cause, and even fewer have the resolve to confront it.
But in a world lost in moral decay, the enduring power of truth is a beacon we can no longer ignore.
A Contemptuous Attitude Leading to Decline
Over time society has come to hold truth in contempt, underestimating its significance and gradually eroding its very foundation. The result has been the unravelling of societal values.
Once, political and religious leaders were expected to be bastions of integrity; now comparisons often highlight how their actions mirror the self-serving tendencies they should guard against.
Politicians entrusted with public funds sometimes allow personal gain to overshadow public responsibility, prioritising their desire over their duty. Similarly, some religious leaders disregard the principles they preach, failing to demonstrate accountability with the resources entrusted to their institutions.
Both know the importance of truth and the harm deception inflicts. Yet some choose to pursue selfish gains with little regard for consequences. In this pursuit, they prioritise wealth over responsibility, often leaving communities disillusioned and betrayed.
American writer Mark Twain once commented, “Politicians and diapers must be changed often and for the same reason.” For him to have uttered these words, he must have been very distressed. Despite the passage of a century, Twain’s critique remains pertinent as today’s political and moral landscape mirrors the same issues. Religious leaders, too, would benefit from remembering the warning in 1 Timothy 10:6, which cautions that “the love of money is the root of all kinds of evil, for which some strayed from the faith in their greediness, and pierced themselves with sorrow.”
Youth Wandering in a Fog of Confusion
If adults are swept up in a self-interest and pursuit of pleasure, adolescents are often left to navigate life without a stable moral compass. In their world the pull of distraction and instant gratification can drown out the voice of reason.
Party culture, loud music, impulsivity, and excess have become common, resulting in unplanned pregnancies and the continuation of a cycle where children in turn, are raising children.
This lack of guidance and discipline is visible not only in behaviour but also in the attitudes and appearance of some youth. Young men wear jeans that reveal too much, while young women choose attire that leaves little to the imagination.
Sadly, many parents have grown indifferent, leaving a void that permits harmful influences to fester. As Nobel laureate Wole Soyinka notes, real change requires a shift in how we approach materialism, corruption, and crime, particularly when it comes to our youth.
To reclaim their leadership, parents must confront this decline with the one tool that can withstand every assault: the truth. By embracing their roles as moral guides, parents can halt the downward slide and offer their children a foundation rooted in integrity.
A Call for Renewal Through Truth
Despite the challenges, there is hope. Reclaiming truth and restoring moral values is not an impossible task. It begins with each of us acknowledging that truth is an essential antidote to the lies that cloud our world. As a society, we must return to the values that uplift and guide us, leaving behind the distractions of materialism and self-gain. Change is possible, and with truth as our foundation, it is within reach.
